Wirral Talking Newspaper

Wirral Talking Newspaper is a completely free service and is run entirely by volunteers. Our aim is to keep the blind and visually impaired residents of Wirral up to date with all local news, and we are indebted to The Wirral News and The Globe who allow us to use their publications freely.

After a busy two years the changeover to digital recording was completed at the end of September. As reported in the previous newsletter the Newspaper took the decision to issue new speakers free of charge to all our listeners. Harry Jones, our listener representative, is pictured displaying our range of MP3 players.

A dedicated team of volunteers visited all 430 plus listeners in their own homes to demonstrate the new technology and it has been inspiring to see the listeners embracing it with such enthusiasm and interest.

The new computer system is up and running and has resulted in a more speedy and reliable service for listeners. We have been able to implement our new systems because of you, our donors. Thank you for all your help.

We are always looking for volunteers and if you know of anyone who might be interested in volunteering, or in receiving the Talking Newspaper, please give them our number 0151 653 4787 and we will be happy to contact them.

Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council
An employer’s view

As one of the biggest employers in Wirral, the Council has, for many years, encouraged “payroll giving” by its employees. For staff who wish to help people less fortunate than themselves payroll giving is such an easy, and tax effective, way to do it. Of course there are a bewildering number of charities to chose from when trying to decide on the one to receive your donations; from very large international ones to very small local ones, all doing good work.

However, Wirral Donate has a special appeal to me. It is a consortium of six local charities which, between them, provide support to a wide spectrum of disadvantaged people who live on the Wirral. I know that my donation to Wirral Donate is going to local people in need, and is helping to bring some relief and pleasure to their lives.

I have no hesitation in urging Council staff who do not, at present, make payroll donations, to consider doing so. It is so easy and satisfying.

MS Society - Wirral Branch

We are delighted to report that the opening of a brand new scheme, Wirral Wellbeing for MS, for our members at Overton Community Centre, was an overwhelming success. We now provide group exercise class options for those able to stand and for those who need to remain seated (wheelchair users etc.). There is also a gym with leg exercise equipment and an already thriving social interaction.

The Mayor and Mayoress of Wirral, Councillor Alan and Mrs Jennings, officially opened the project in September 2010. The event was also attended by Wirral West MP Esther McVey, health representatives from the area and around 100 members and guests to make this a truly memorable occasion.

The support of many local firms also enabled the day to be a resounding success.

We are indebted to our volunteers and funders (including “Wirral Donate” and “Awards for All – Lottery) for their help in setting up and running this exceptionally popular initiative. This scheme is an addition to the numerous other activities we provide for anyone affected by MS on Wirral.

If you would like any information about MS, or you would like to join our branch, please contact us on 07833 051 707

Wirral Autistic Society

July saw the opening of The Ferns, pictured above, our state-ofthe-art respite centre, after many months of hard work fundraising.

Various open days have been held to show staff, parents, supporters and friends the new six bedded facility which is the only autism-specific respite centre in the North West. The facilities are superb and will provide many families with the opportunity to take a short break from the pressure of having someone in the family with autism safe in the knowledge that their loved ones are being given the expert care and support they need. For many it will be the first time in years that they will be able to a break.

The centre will be a vital resource for the region and bookings already show how much in demand the centre will be. By the time this Newsletter is published, we will have held our last fundraising event with an Autumn Extravaganza Gala Ball at the Adelphi Hotel in Liverpool to celebrate the achievement and thank many of those who helped make it possible, including those who have donated through Wirral Donate.

Crossroads Care

We are proud to announce that our Cameo Club was the North West winner of: The Kerrygold Community Awards 2010.

We received the most votes from the public! This prize of £1,000 will go some way to guarantee ongoing support for its members who are in the early stages of dementia, who enjoy group activities, as in the picture of the outing to the Boat Museum, which provide opportunities to socialise, whilst their carers have a break.

At the other end of the age spectrum, services in Wirral for parent/carers and their children with special needs have been boosted with residential weekends at Barnstondale Activity Centre, plus an after-school club, overnight stays, more support for our weekend clubs and a home based sitting service. In addition, we ran a holiday play scheme, staff cover for sessions at Adventure Land, a play scheme for children with Downs Syndrome, and computer support for children with a disability.

The positive outcomes have been outstanding. Parent/carers have commented about how their children have gained confidence and improved their independent living skills, especially while on overnight breaks. Friendships have been forged and children and young people are enjoying new activities and experiences.

Age Concern Wirral

Age Concern Wirral continues to be extremely grateful to Wirral Donate’s supporters for their generosity during the year. As a local, independent charity we are run by local people and exist solely for the benefit of local residents within the Borough.

Later life can present a whole range of different decisions, options and challenges, and we believe that older people deserve high-quality and professional services and activities throughout their later years.

During the course of the last year, we have undertaken a major fundraising appeal to build a new wing at our Devonshire Resource Centre in order to cater for the needs of younger people, under the age of 65, experiencing a diagnosis of early onset dementia. This much needed facility has recently opened and is providing invaluable help, support and care to people at a very distressing and frightening time in their lives.

The money raised from Wirral Donate will continue to contribute towards our Appeal Fund in order to meet the final balance required to pay for the building.

Wirral Resource Centre for Special Needs Children

The Wirral Resource Centre is a specialist centre for children with special and additional needs.

We are a unique charity, who offers this specialist therapy to the children, whilst also offering support to the parents and/or carers, inline with their child’s development needs.

Over the past few months we have held a Charity Gala, at the Adelphi Hotel in Liverpool, to raise our profile and also raise funds to help with the running costs of the centre.

The Mayor, Councillor Alan Jennings attended our Gala, and will be visiting the centre at the end of October. Pictured with the Mayor, are Lynn Chamberlain (CentreManager) and her partner Steve Donovan. This was a fantastic Fund Raiser, which we will be doing again next year.

The Centre is also working with the Aiming High team and holding sessions at the weekend for children with language and communication difficulties up to the age of eight years old.

Information, about when the next sessions start, is available through the Centre on 0151 608 8288 or visit our website www.wirralresource.co.uk
